Part 2 — The 8-step buying process

The 8-step process to buy a yacht in Dubai

This is the step-by-step buying playbook every Dubai yacht buyer should follow — the same sequence BoatFinder+ concierge uses on every transaction. Set aside 3–6 weeks for a standard pre-owned purchase, or 8–14 weeks for a superyacht or cross-border transfer.

1

Define your use case and budget

Decide upfront: day cruising, weekend overnights, entertaining, offshore fishing, or charter income. Then set a total budget covering purchase + 8–12% first-year running costs (berthing, insurance, crew, maintenance, fuel). Overbuying is the single most common mistake first-time Dubai owners make.

2

Shortlist on BoatFinder+

Filter verified listings by length, price, year, condition, and marina. Save 5–8 candidates. Prioritise Verified Sellers and yachts with full service history and GCC-spec air conditioning — critical for Dubai summers.

3

Verify the seller and title

Confirm the seller's trade licence (dealers) or Emirates ID (private). Request the mulkiya (ownership certificate), current DMCA/SCA registration, and any outstanding finance letter. A BoatFinder+ verification badge appears only where approved identity and licence evidence is on file for that seller.

4

Commission a TruCheck™ inspection

Independent surveyor inspects hull, engines, electronics, generators, gelcoat, running gear, and service records. Report is delivered within 3–5 business days. Any yacht above AED 500k should never be bought without one.

5

Sea trial

Test at cruising and top speed, check engine temperatures under load, verify all electronics, air conditioning, and stabilisers. Bring the surveyor or a captain you trust — never the seller's captain alone.

6

Negotiate and close via a broker or lawyer client account

Use written offers with a clear inspection contingency. Close through a UAE-licensed broker or marine lawyer's client account — never wire funds directly against a mulkiya scan. The client account releases funds on successful registration transfer. BoatFinder+ does not hold buyer or seller funds.

7

Register with DMCA or SCA

Dubai-berthed yachts register with DMCA; other Emirates with SCA. Fees range AED 500–5,000 depending on length. Processing takes 5–10 business days. Bring: purchase agreement, previous mulkiya, insurance certificate, Emirates ID or trade licence, and hull number verification.

8

Insure, berth, and crew up

Secure a marine hull-and-liability policy (typical premium 0.8–1.4% of hull value per year). Confirm your berth reservation. If the yacht is above 40 ft, engage a licensed captain or management company for compliance, maintenance, and — optionally — charter income.

Once you've internalised the sequence, the next question is where the yacht will live — Dubai's four main marinas each suit a different owner profile. Compare marinas in Part 3, or jump straight to yachts for sale in Dubai.
