Two of the most common purchase decisions in the UAE marine market: a planing speed boat for fast day trips, or a cruising yacht for overnight stays and entertaining. This guide compares both on use case, running costs, licensing, and resale.

Speed boats (6–10 m) suit day trips, watersports, fishing, and quick coastal cruising. Yachts (10–24 m) add overnight cabins, galley, climate control, and entertaining capacity — ideal for weekend trips to Musandam, Sir Bani Yas, or Abu Dhabi.
| Item | 9 m speed boat | 15 m yacht |
|---|---|---|
| Berth (Dubai Marina) | AED 12k | AED 45k |
| Insurance | AED 4k | AED 18k |
| Maintenance + antifoul | AED 8k | AED 35k |
| Fuel (50 hours/yr) | AED 6k | AED 28k |
| Total | ~AED 30k | ~AED 126k |
Speed boats from premium brands (Yamaha, Axopar, Boston Whaler) hold value remarkably well in the UAE — depreciation flattens to ~50% of MSRP after year 5. Yachts depreciate more steeply (15–20% year one) but premium European builds (Princess, Sunseeker, Azimut) retain stronger residuals than mass-production models.

A yacht is generally a vessel above 10 m (33 ft) designed for overnight cruising, with cabins, galley, and bathroom. A speed boat is typically 6–10 m, optimised for day use and high-speed planing performance, without overnight accommodation. In the UAE, both are popular for different use cases — yachts for weekend escapes to Musandam or Sir Bani Yas, speed boats for day trips around Dubai Marina and The Palm.
Speed boats are dramatically cheaper across all cost categories. A 9 m speed boat costs roughly AED 18k–35k per year (berth, insurance, fuel, maintenance), while a 15 m yacht typically runs AED 90k–180k per year. Crew, if needed, adds AED 60k–250k more.
The UAE Pleasure Craft Operator Licence covers private vessels up to 24 m. Larger yachts above 24 m or those used commercially (charter) require additional endorsements. Speed boats above 30 knots may also require a high-speed endorsement in some emirates.
