Marine ropes in Dubai cover mooring lines, docklines, anchor rode, towing lines, halyards and sheets, supplied by the metre or made up with spliced eyes. Nylon suits mooring and anchoring because it stretches and absorbs shock; polyester suits control lines. UV and heat shorten rope life in the UAE, so lines need inspection and rotation.
Three-strand or braided nylon. Nylon's elasticity absorbs surge and wash, protecting cleats and the hull. Polyester is stronger for its size but has little stretch, which transfers shock loads straight into the deck fittings.
Less than in temperate climates. Sustained UV, heat and salt degrade the outer fibres, so many UAE owners rotate mooring lines every one to two years, and inspect for chafe, stiffness and colour fade at every wash-down.
Size by length and displacement, then check breaking load against the boat's weight with a safety margin. Give the supplier your boat length, displacement and berth type and they can specify diameter and length per line.
For control lines, soft shackles and running rigging where weight and stretch matter, yes. For mooring lines it is the wrong tool — it has almost no stretch, so shock loads go straight into the fittings.
Most rope suppliers offer cutting and splicing, including rope-to-chain splices for anchor rode. Give exact lengths and eye sizes; a spliced eye retains far more strength than a knot.
Fit chafe guards or hose sleeves where the line crosses the fairlead or quay edge, keep the lead angle fair, and rotate lines end-for-end periodically. Chafe, not load, is what parts most mooring lines in marinas.
